Update 36 - Fatal Frame 5: Maiden of Black Water
I’m not a reviewer- I played and enjoyed the game is all and wanted to talk about it. I can’t talk about what I’m writing, but it’s going well. Word count go up.
I took the time to finally finish Fatal Frame Maiden of Blackwater on the Nintendo Switch. I remember playing the original Fatal Frame on Xbox- the premise is that you have a spirit camera (camera obscura) that you use to protect yourself against ghosts as you explore a spooky Japanese mansion. I found Maiden of Black Water to feel less engaging than the original game, but only by memory comparison.
Graphically the game is beautiful and runs smoothly. Water plays a large role in the presence of spirits in Black Water, and the effects are impressive even for a remaster of an older title. I think what most people know this game for is the clinging wet clothes and jiggle effects. The team that worked on this game was also responsible for Dead or Alive Beach Volley Ball, so the attention to particular details is to be expected. Still, it didn’t really serve any purpose to the actual aesthetic or gameplay.
That all being said, it was a solid game. Kind of linear compared to what I expected, but it makes it straight forward enough to complete. If you can catch it on a sale, I would highly recommend it.
